MetaTrader vs cTrader

The two platforms most brokers offer, and the choice that shapes your day-to-day trading. Here is how MetaTrader and cTrader compare on execution, charting, automation, availability and cost.

6 min read Last updated · {{ today }}

Most brokers hand you a choice of platform, and for the majority it comes down to MetaTrader or cTrader. They can both view charts, place trades and automate strategies, so on the surface they look similar. The differences are in feel and philosophy: MetaTrader is the established giant with an enormous ecosystem, while cTrader is the modern challenger built around transparent execution. Here is how they stack up where it counts.

The short version

MetaTrader wins on reach and its vast library of tools. cTrader wins on interface design, native depth-of-market and execution tuned for raw pricing. Neither is universally better, the right pick depends on whether you value MetaTrader’s ecosystem or cTrader’s modern, transparent execution.

Execution and pricing

cTrader was built for ECN-style execution, routing orders to the market with native depth-of-market so you can see the liquidity behind a quote. MetaTrader can be used with ECN brokers too, but depth-of-market is less central to its design. If transparent execution and raw pricing are priorities, cTrader has the edge here.

Charting and interface

Both offer solid charting, but cTrader’s interface is widely seen as cleaner and more modern, with a gentler learning curve for the eye. MetaTrader’s look is more dated, though thoroughly functional and familiar to millions. This is partly taste, so trialling both is the best way to judge which you prefer to look at all day.

Automation and tools

Here MetaTrader’s history pays off. Its expert advisors have a massive, long-established library, so ready-made automated strategies and indicators are plentiful. cTrader’s cBots are capable and use C#, which some developers prefer, but the ecosystem is smaller. For sheer availability of tools, MetaTrader leads.

Availability

MetaTrader’s biggest practical advantage is reach: almost every broker offers MT4, MT5 or both. cTrader is available at a growing number of brokers, typically ECN-focused ones, but it is not universal. If cTrader is a must-have, confirm your chosen broker supports it before opening an account.

Which should you choose?

Choose MetaTrader if you want maximum broker choice, the largest tool library, or you already know it. Choose cTrader if you value a modern interface, native depth-of-market and execution built for raw pricing, and your broker offers it. Since many brokers provide both, the smartest move is to demo each and let your own hands decide.
